The Alamodome was recently contacted by the USA Bid Committee for the FIFA World Cup (2018 or 2022).
The USA Bid Committee mailed letters last week to public officials and stadium operators in metropolitan markets across the United States in an initial and important step toward preparing a formal bid to play host to the FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022.
69 other venues were also contacted including the University of Texas’ Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, which has a capacity of around 95,000. The Alamodome, which can be expanded to seat 72,000, seems like a long shot as it will be celebrating its 25 year anniversary in May of 2018. Granted a lot can happen in 9 years to make the Alamodome a world class soccer venue or maybe another stadium option in San Antonio will present itself in the future.
The World Cup in San Antonio would be the ultimate for San Antonio footy fans, but we will be happy to settle for another venue in the Lone Star State.
