The past week has been eventful for the San Antonio Scorpions earning their first win of the season vs Fort Lauderdale before being eliminated in the second round of the US Open Cup vs PDL side FC Tucson. The Scorpions added another three goals to their NASL season tally in the win bringing their total to seven and raising the team up from last place.
Today’s game is against the Atlanta Silverbacks who the Scorpions scored their first two goals of the season back on May 4. That match, in San Antonio, ended in a 2 – 2 draw with all four goals scored in the first half. The Scorpions had chances in the second half to earn the full three points but were unable to convert. That game started a three game scoring streak that eventually led to the Scorpions’ first win last weekend. Atlanta has been strong at home, starting the season with two wins and one loss. Their only loss came against our next opponent Minnesota United FC. In that game, Atlanta led late but allowed two goals in the final ten minutes. Atlanta came out victorious in their US Open Cup action this week winning 3 – 2 against the Georgia Revolution.
San Antonio is looking to get back on that winning track after losing in penalties to FC Tucson on Tuesday. It was a disappointing loss to an amateur team two levels below the NASL. The players lacked the killer instinct to finish the numerous opportunities to score and will need to find that drive again to win their second NASL game of the season. It will be another makeshift defense this week with Janicki still out and Lyle Martin questionable after a hamstring injury in Tuesday’s game. Coach Hankinson will be called upon to find the right players this evening to play in a defense that has allowed ten goals in the past four games. Kevin Harmse will be available tonight after serving his suspension last week for his red card.
The Scorpions had four players receive NASL Team of the Week honors for their play in the 3 – 1 win last week against Fort Lauderdale. Wagner, Vucko, Saavedra, and Bayona each earned a spot on the team with Javier Saavedra also earning NASL Player of the Week honors. Saavedra scored one goal and collected an assist on a header by Vucko in that performance. San Antonio may be in luck in tonight’s game. With Atlanta winning Tuesday, they will travel to play Real Salt Lake in US Open Cup action May 28. That could mean a lineup today that is quite different from the one we faced earlier this month. The Scorpions may be able to steal this victory if the Silverbacks are looking ahead to their next game rather than focusing on this one. Those four players who won Team of the Week honors will be called upon for a repeat performance to bring home the three points.
No board comments today.
With a win against Atlanta tonight, the Scorpions could be only three points off the NASL leaders (Carolina has a bye week and Minnesota must win vs Tampa Bay). The win would also do much to help San Antonio as they look to climb the league table. It will be clear skies in Atlanta – vastly different from the onslaught of rain in San Antonio today. Can the Scorpions take advantage of the fair weather? Atlanta Silverbacks 1 – 2 Scorpions.
