The Scorpions earned their second straight home win thanks to the efforts of three new signings. Tomasz Zahorski scored his seventh NASL goal since joining the Scorpions this July, this one coming from a Walter Ramirez corner kick. Two of the new signings partnered together on the play that led to the corner with Dennis Chin supplying the pass that sent Sainey Touray on a race to the goal. Touray’s shot was deflected at the last possible moment by the defender to send the ball out for the Scorpions’ corner. The opposing goalkeeper made many saves throughout the game but was unable to do anything but watch as Zahorski headed the ball from the back post into the back of the net.

The Scorpions will face FC Edmonton in the early game of this weekend’s doubleheader. FC Edmonton also won last weekend staying four points ahead of the Scorpions at the bottom of the league standings. Goals haven’t come easily this Fall for the eddies but they were able to score two last weekend that proved to be enough for their 2 – 1 victory. Carolina scored their only goal of the game in the 75th minute that led to a nervy fifteen minutes where FC Edmonton was under constant pressure but their defense held strong for the win. Edmonton’s defense has always been a strength for the team with the back line breaking wave after wave of offensive threat. The Scorpions were unable to crash through the line in Canada in August eventually losing 0 – 1. However, FC Edmonton is winless away from home in 2013 and will be looking to change that fortune at Toyota Field.

Hans Denissen will be unavailable for today’s game after being injured early in last week’s match. Denissen was coming in along the right side of the box ready to connect with an Edin Husic cross. Atlanta’s goalkeeper won the ball in the air but also looked to throw his foot out at the last moment making contact with Hans and sending Denissen sprawling to the ground. The referee immediately called on the trainer but didn’t give any other warning to Atlanta. That strike busted Denissen’s lip requiring six stitches and also resulted in an injury to his knee. That dirty play will hopefully not keep Denissen out for more than this game as he is still tied for first in the golden boot race.

The Scorpions signed three new players on Friday before the Atlanta game. Dennis Chin started the match and caused trouble for Atlanta’s defense from the beginning. Sainey Touray was subbed on for Denissen after his injury. Touray was responsible for many of the Atlanta turnovers as they couldn’t keep a lot of possession with his pressure. Ciaran O’Brien came into the game for Chin in the 69th minute continuing the added pressure with his speed closing down on opposition quickly. All three players had good games and showed what has been lacking for the Scorpions all year. They brought a youthfulness to the team and showed off their speed and agility. After preaching about pressure, the team finally found players to help produce it. Interim Head Coach Alen Marcina knew they would “add a spark to our roster” and it’s good to see he wasn’t wrong. All three players signed through the end of the season with Chin on loan from the USL Champions Orlando City SC. Look for all three to make a presence this weekend.

“FC Edmonton are very organized and disciplined defensively. They are a difficult team to break down, but we will come out trying to get three points no matter what. We have won two straight games at home, and we want to make it three.” -Scorpions Head Coach, Alen Marcina.

The Scorpions and fans will indeed be looking for their third straight home victory. Both Zahorski and Ramirez earned NASL Team of the Week honors for last week’s play. They, Chin, Touray, and O’Brien will all need another week of strong performances if San Antonio is to see another win in Toyota Field. Scorpions 2 – 1 FC Edmonton.

The second game of this weekend’s doubleheader will see Liga MX sides Santos Laguna and Xolos de Tijuana face off in the “War of Champions”. This is the second time the San Antonio Scorpions have featured a doubleheader since their inauguration. Last year, Monterrey and San Luis both visited San Antonio for an exhibition match which Monterrey won 1 – 0.
