Last year didn’t go the way the Scorpions wanted missing out on hosting the Soccer Bowl by one goal in the Spring Season before finishing last in the table for the Fall Season. This off-season has disappointed all Scorpions fans with Hans Denissen being picked up by the New York Cosmos and other notable players being left off the roster. There have been some bright spots for the Scorpions though. They’ve assembled a brand new squad with several new faces with a lot of NASL, MLS, and international experience. This new team has gone undefeated in preseason matches including a 1 – 1 draw vs FC Dallas and a 1 – 0 win against the Houston Dynamo.
Today will see a continuation of a large forming rivalry as Minnesota United FC (aka “Mini U”) help start the season at Toyota Field. United have new faces come into their club as well but the most notable roster concern at this point is Pablo Campos’s absence. Campos has earned himself the Spring season off after an injury a month ago. The end result may mean fewer on the pitch fights today.
The rivalry has been intense with tension between former players causing most of the on field aggression. The San Antonio Scorpions only have eight players on the current roster that have been in a Scorpions uniform prior to this season. This will calm things a bit but that doesn’t mean the rivalry is cooling off. Our own President Howard Cornfield has taken to news and social media outlets fanning the flames. Being the first game of the season also means that the stadium will be rocking with the energy only a new year can bring. One thing is certain. The game will be entertaining.
“The team and staff are thrilled about taking the pitch on Saturday in front of what is sure to be an electric San Antonio crowd. Competing against Minnesota has traditionally led to both memorable and fiercely contested matches.” – Scorpions coach Alen Marcina
They have indeed been memorable with United knocking the Scorpions out of the playoffs in our inaugural season and then the fight last season that resulted in game suspensions for players from both teams. This Spring season is a sprint with each team playing only nine games. The Scorpions must take advantage of having an extra home game if they’re going to have a chance of becoming Spring season champions. The fans must show their support on the way to that championship.
The Crocketteers have added new merchandise you can find at our FREE pregame tailgate. New scarves and tshirts will be available for purchase alongside familiar items like our key chains, car decals, and koozies. The tailgate starts at 4:00 pm. Get there early to enjoy the brisket, HEB hotdogs and hamburgers, and more! As always, water will be available but we’ve also added soda this year. Don’t forget Glazer will be supporting our tailgates as well with ice cold Miller Lite. And all the food and drinks are FREE! How much better could it get?
The Crocketteers will leave the tailgate on our march to the stadium and singing and chanting will only continue from there as we cheer our team to victory. The start of any season is special but the outlook on this one looks bright. For those Scorpions 2014 Season Ticket Holders that may not have received their ticket for today’s game yet, the Scorpions have made it possible for you to contact them. We look forward to seeing everyone at both events and of course to a Scorpions win. Scorpions 2 – 1 Minnesota United FC.
