We’re counting down the days until the 2014 NASL Playoffs begin by providing a bit of info on each team that made this year’s tournament. Today we take a look at the number three seed, the New York Cosmos.

This was the New York Cosmos first full year after returning to the NASL last Fall. They went to and won last years Soccer Bowl against Atlanta. Looking to repeat this year, the Cosmos started strong missing out on winning the Spring title by one point. New York sat in third place in the combined standings for almost the entire Fall season. They earned 19 of 27 possible points in the Spring and 23 of 54 in the Fall. The 42 points earned them the third seed and a trip (back) to San Antonio for the semi-final.

The Cosmos only loss in their last six games was to their next opponent, and that was a final-second goal in the last game of the regular season. The coach rested key players during that final match looking ahead to the postseason. Now, the Cosmos are back in San Antonio to face off against the Scorpions again in Toyota Field.

Like the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, the New York Cosmos were unable to get any points from the three games against San Antonio. Having just played them a week ago, the game is certainly fresh in everybody’s mind. It’s going to be a physical game from the first whistle. Wins have come hard for the Cosmos in the Fall but they’ll need to get one here if they have any hope of winning back-to-back NASL titles.

The play from last week’s game will give them hope that they can indeed repeat. It’s all about the end result and the Cosmos don’t see the season ending quite yet. Last year, the Cosmos beat Atlanta in their final regular season game before again beating them in the playoffs to win the title. What will be the outcome this year? New York certainly has their eyes on the prize.
